Jazz Concert - June 1st

MUSIC CONCERT - Shades of Gray
Hillsdale Library
Sunday, June 1st 2pm

Shades of Gray, at its’ core, is an eclectic musical ensemble. The group features the talents of guitarist David Dunn (a music teacher at Smith and Meadowbrook schools) along with drummer Michael Augello and bassist Tim Santo.

What makes the group interesting is that all the members enjoy playing different styles of music. For this performance a jazz theme is being prepared, but the group enjoys playing in various idioms from country to rock. Additional musicians are brought in on occasion to augment the sound. “Our goal is to constantly play music that sounds fresh and is interesting for us to play, so we very rarely play the same set list twice.”

Author Alan Weisman - rescheduled for Feb 26th

Author Night - Alan Weisman " Prince of Darkness: Richard Perle : The Kingdom, the Power, and the End of Empire in America
WhenTue, Feb 26, 7:30pm – 9:00pm

Brilliant political operative Richard Perle is known for his neoconservative views and hard-line support for expanding America's military might. Making extensive use of interviews with Perle and his supporters and detractors alike, Weisman (Lone Star: The Extraordinary Life and Times of Dan Rather) illuminates many of the darker corners of this mysterious character. Portraying Perle sympathetically on at least a personal level, Weisman highlights his dedication to improving, as he sees it, the national defense of his country and the skill apparent in his proudest achievements: the Jackson-Vanik amendment forcing the Soviet Union to allow Jews to emigrate and the completion of the INF treaty drawing down Soviet nuclear missiles. Weisman also debunks the idea that Perle is primarily concerned with Israel's security, though at times he seems a little too eager to forgo in-depth analysis in favor of snappy comebacks. Weisman concludes: If Richard Perle is guilty of anything, it is of a sadly stupefying resolve, a middle-of-the-road verdict that may be honest but is unlikely to either please Perle's most fervent fans or convert his opponents. On Exhibit - Justin Heller

Justin Heller will present 6 large format acrylic paintings at the Hillsdale Library during August. Heller, a Hillsdale resident, is profoundly color blind, having a form called deuteranopia. He can only see two of the three colors normally expressed by the cone pigments in the human eye. "Throughout my life people have asked me to describe what it is like to be color blind. I have no logical answer," says Heller.
"Color invokes emotions and memory is often linked to color. It is this aspect that drives that nature of my artwork and approach.
The show is entitled "Animal Tales for the Color Blind." Each of the paintings is inspired by visions formed while reading stories to his young children.

Mr. Heller holds a Masters from New York Univeristy’s Tisch School of the Arts.

"Horse in Waves" is inspired by the book "The Sand Horse" by Ann Turnbull.

Last Harry Hurrah!

The Hillsdale Free Public Library hosted a successful Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows release party.
Over 150 wizards, muggles and curious onlookers walked through the doors at 10:00 p.m. They were immediately sorted into the four houses of Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff, and Ravenclaw.
Attendees were treated to magical punch, make-your-own pretzel wands, and other assorted treats. Although all were kept busy during the trivia contest and entertained by Richard the Magician's impressive magic show, nothing was more exciting than the final countdown to midnight. Over 100 copies of the book were distributed within 15 minutes. What grew to become a raucous crescendo quickly faded to the soft flicking of pages throughout the stacks. Thirty-eight teens signed up in advance to participate in the lock-in portion of the event. They quickly settled into the final book. Their attention was fuelled by the generous donation of Starbucks Coffee and the fabled Demarest Farms' donuts. The teens will emerge from the library at 7:00 a.m. the following morning.

BIG BLOWOUT USED BOOK SALE

A used book sale will be held at the Hillsdale Library on Saturday, June 30, from 10am to 4pm. Proceeds will benefit the Friends of the Hillsdale Library and American Legion Post #162. Donations of gently used books in good to great condition will be accepted at the library during the week of June 25-29.

Digital History

Hillsdale History is available for download from the Hillsdale Library website. The first phase of the Hillsdale Herald digitization project is complete. Would be researchers can now search an archive of the town newspaper from 1929 through 1942. Local newspapers provide a rich resource that documents the political, economic, and social developments over time.

The library is extremely fortunate to possess original copies of the Herald and is pleased to once again make them a valuable contribution to the community. Phase I of this project preserves the newspapers that were published during a critical and tumultuous time in United States history – the period from the Great Depression to the outbreak and early involvement in World War II.

Issues are searchable. The Adobe PDF files are large and require a fast broadband Internet connection. The newspapers may also be viewed using the library’s public computers. The images load much faster from the internal network. Users will delight in local gossip, advertisements, birth, marriage, and death announcements.

Funding has been made possible in part through grant funds administered by the Bergen County Department of Parks, Division of Cultural and Historic Affairs through a General Operating Support grant from the New Jersey Historical Commission, a Division of Cultural Affairs in the Department of State.

Memorial Additions

Last year the Library was the recipient of many generous donations made in the memory of Karyl Lynn, Board Member and Friend of the Library. To honor his memory the Library Board dedicated the media room to him. Karyl loved jazz music and was proud of the fact the library offered so many different materials to the public – not just books. This year the library has added over 40 classic jazz albums and some box sets to its collection. The Karyl Lynn memorial collection will continue to grow over the next few months. Check them out.

Please also visit the children’s room. Through a generous contribution from the Kenny Cardaci Foundation, new picture book shelving was installed. The additional 100 linear feet of shelf space permitted the creative rearrangement of furniture, special displays, and video collections. More picture books are now at a level where little ones can delight in their bright covers.

Yesterday’s Today Show Art Show

The Hillsdale Library is pleased to host the professional artwork of Robert L. Bader. The show will run from March 1 to March 30.

Robert Bader, of Hillsdale, will exhibit 12 large format paintings he produced for the Today Show during his 17 year tenure as a scenic artist for the show. During the 1980’s the producers sent Bryant Gumbel, Jane Pauley, Willard Scott, John Palmer, and Gene Shalit abroad on trips around the world. Mr. Bader created themed illustrations that introduced each trip. The exhibit includes the trip to Charles and Diana’s Royal Wedding, the trip to China, and the 1989 Presidential Inauguration.

Before the advent of blue screen technology, Willard Scott would present his weather forecast in front of a hand painted map of the United States. Mr. Bader was responsible for creating all of the cartoon weather symbols and adjusting the map to reflect the weather each day. In 1986, a hand crafted quilt based upon Mr. Bader’s artistic weather map was created for the Great American Quilt Festival. The quilt is now in the permanent collection of the Museum of American Folk Art. A photo album documenting the weather map, symbols, and the quilt is also on view at the library.

The work of Janet Kroenke is on display in the meeting room of the Hillsdale Library from October 1 to October 31st.

Janet Kroenke has worked as a commercial artist and illustrator for over 30 years. The paintings and computer generated compositions in this show represent the past year’s work in oils on canvas and digital imaging.

When painting in oil, Janet takes her inspirations from the forms, color and lighting in nature. Most of her works are interpretations in the abstract or modernist approach.

As a surrealist for many years, she has found that digital imaging with Photoshop provides the perfect tool for the juxtaposition of images in montage style compositions. Many of these works contain her drawings and photos as well as images available in the Public Domain from many sources.

2005 Annual Report

Library Statistics Speak Volumes

Hillsdale Library Director, David Franz, recently presented the 2005 Annual report to the Board of Trustees. The report revealed several interesting statistics of which the library can be proud.

Cost per circulation is an indicator of efficiency.
Based on 2004 data from the State of New Jersey, among the 51 other public libraries serving populations between 10,000 and 15,000 residents, Hillsdale Library had the lowest cost per item circulated in its class, at $3.11. The average cost per circulation for the group was $9.84. Hillsdale also had the 2nd highest circulation per capita at 16.4 items circulated per resident. The average circulation per capita was 6.3 items.

When compared to 46 libraries with similar budgets, Hillsdale Library also ranked well. The cost per circulation ranked as the 2nd lowest and the circulation per capita was the 6th highest.

In 2005, the library circulated 165,088 items. The library’s circulation is double the state average for libraries serving a similar population size and operating in a similar budget range. The library’s overall operating budget and the percentage allocated to salaries, wages, benefits, and materials mirrors the state and local averages. In summary, the library is operating at a very high level of efficiency and productivity.

The library remained under renovation for most of 2005 and had some impact on services. Despite these obstacles, circulation remained robust and increased 2.2% over 2004.

Meanwhile, the library added several new services during the year:
□ Color printers were added to the computer network
□ Wireless Internet access (Wi-Fi) is now available
□ Three staff members became commissioned notaries
□ The public meeting room was utilized by many community groups
□ A teen manga and anime club was launched
□ Free introductory computer classes were provided
□ A self-service coffee, tea, and hot chocolate station was made available
□ Bookdrops were opened to 24 hour service
□ Loan period for audiobooks was extended from 2 weeks to 4 weeks
□ Residents may now apply for a library card online

The full-text of the annual report can be found on the library’s trustee webpage:

Another interesting document is a "Directory of Hillsdale, Compliments of Explorer Post 108, BSA." Our best guess dates this item circa 1950. It is a listing of local business and includes a map of Hillsdale on the obverse. This item is on loan from the Hillsdale Ambulance Corps.

Please contact Rich Curran (RichCurran@verizon.net) with any further information on Hillsdale scouting history.

Items will be on display until the end of February.

Downloadable Audiobooks

Downloadable audiobooks are now available to Hillsdale library card holders. The Bergen County Cooperative Library System (BCCLS) recently announced a partnership with Recorded Books, a well known publisher of high quality audiobooks.

Over 1,100 titles are currently available. Thirty new titles are added every month. Titles include bestsellers, classics, and Pimsleur language courses.

Audiobooks may be used for a 21 day loan period. After this they may be renewed. Titles may be downloaded many times. No more than 10 books may be ‘checked out’ at one time.

Because the content is protected using Windows Media security protocols, users must use either Windows Media Player version 9 or 10 to download the files. Books may then be transferred to portable MP3 players that support the WMA format. Only MP3 players that meet the standard for handling subscription based download services will be able to play these secure files. Until licensing issues can be resolved, these files will not play on Ipods.

For more information and to establish your own account visit:
http://www.bccls.org

Hillsdale Library Launches Blog!

After a brainstorming ideas for Summer Reading 2004, the staff decided it was high time to launch our own blog. We hope you find it insightful, amusing, and worthwhile. We will introduce you to various library services and resources. Many will be familiar, but many will amaze you! We recently added the New York Times historical database to our collection of online resources. You can view all of the content SINCE 1851!!!!! all from the comfort of home/work/library. Pretty cool? We think so.
