Our Lightning Thief quest began with cabin assignments and trivia. The brave heroes then split into groups to impersonate the gods (charades) and try their hands at archery. I think the campers reveled in the fact that the targets were cardboard cutouts of the library staff!

After getting wrapped in toilet paper togas, teens fled Medusa’s stony stare (whoever I named as "It") in a very fun, very fast game of Medusa Freeze Tag. For more awesome photos check: http://www.flickr.com/photos/hillsdalelibraryteens/

Lightning Thief Party

On Saturday, February 6th from 6:30-8:00 we will be celebrating the awesomeness of the Percy Jackson series and the soon to be released Lightning Thief movie!

There will be trivia, toilet paper togas, tests of skill, and treats fit for demi-gods. Hillsdale residents in 5-8 grade are invited to register. There are only a few spots left. A permission slip is required.

TAG meeting Thurs, Dec 3 from 7-8pm

We will be finalizing plans for next week's bake sale/fundraiser and going over ideas for 2010!! The funds will go to a teen in need. We adopted a teen for the holidays through the Bergen County Volunteers All Wrapped Up Program. If you can't come to the meeting you can still help in the following ways:

Bake something to be sold Mon Dec 7 or Tues Dec 8 after school
Sit at the table to sell bake sale items
Donate a couple of bucks

Donations must be collected by 5pm Tuesday because I must purchase the gifts on Wednesday. Please let me know if and when you will be baking. Thanks!

Two book Clubs for teens

Pizza & Pages is a book club for 7-8 grade students co-sponsored by the Hillsdale Public Library & George White School. The club meets during lunch once a month and pizza is provided through the generosity of The Friends of the Hillsdale Library & The GWFFA. At our next meeting on Wednesday December, 16th we will be discussing The Adoration of Jenna Fox by Mary E Pearson. Copies of the book can be picked up at the public library.

RAWR (Readers Anonymous with Reactions ) is a book club at PV that meets once a month after school. Their next meeting is on Thursday, December 17th. You can pick up a copy of The Declaration by Gemma Malley at the public library so you'll be reading to join in the discussion.

We will be planning a bake sale fundraiser, changing displays, and planning events for 2010. New members are always welcome!

Bake Sale Fundraiser
Monday & Tuesday, Dec 7-8 from 3:00-5:00pm
Buy a delicious treat and raise money to buy holiday gifts for a teen in need. TAG is once again participating in the All Wrapped Up program sponsored by the Volunteer Center of Bergen County. Proceeds from the sale will go to purchasing gifts for a 17-year-old boy.

Holiday Craft
Wednesday, Dec 9 from 3:30-5:30pm
Paint a gift box for a friend, family member, or yourself. Various boxes and paints will be supplied. Create handmade cards if time allows. Registration required.

MA-PA
Thursday, Dec 10 from 7:00-8:00pm at the Montvale Public Library

You have until Sept 18th to vote! Vote for what, you ask. Here's the scoop, "Teens' Top Ten is a 'teen choice' list, where teens nominate and choose their favorite books of the previous year! Nominators are members of teen book groups in fifteen school and public libraries around the country...Readers ages twelve to eighteen can vote right here, online, anytime between Aug. 24 and Sept. 18; the winners will be announced in a webcast featuring WWE Superstars and Divas during Teen Read Week." Teens read all summer long

The summer reading program for teens was a great success! Participants ranged from 7-12 grade, boys and girls, returning members and many new to the program. Their reading choices ran the gamut from classics such as the Count of Monte Cristo; to current favorites including Twilight, The Lightning Thief, and Harry Potter; to such popular manga series as Deathnote and Fruits Basket. Together these book loving teens read approximately 250,000 pages during July and August. That's about 1,000 books!!!

The library thanks The Friends of the Hillsdale Library for their generous support of this program. A thanks also goes to Applebee's, Auntie Anne's Pretzels, Cafe Capri, Friendly's, The Game Zone, The Golden Dynasty, TD Bank, and Wendy's for donated items.

Wii bowling with teens & seniors

A group of seniors received a Wii bowling tutorial from two members of the library's teen advisory group. The seniors then had the opportunity to bowl using the Wii remote. Their games were projected on the large screen in our meeting room.

I often feel overwhelmed by the sheer number of books that I want to read. Consider that I that I work in a place that houses around 60,000 books, I am a slow reader, and I have two young children who need lots of my time.

Hey, teens -- whether you like to make things, talk about books, or play games there is something for you coming up this week at the library. Here's the schedule:

Tuesday from 3:30 - 5:00

Design your own bleach t-shirt. You bring a solid dark color t-shirt, tank, or sweatshirt and ideas. I've got dollies, keys, and other objects, but feel free to bring any flat objects you may want to use in your design. Check out these examples for inspiration.

Wednesday from 3:30-5:30

Games unplugged. Play a variety of board games and cards including Wits and Wagers a very fun, easy to learn game that combines trivia and betting!

Thursday from 7:00-8:00

Talk It Up Book Discussion featuring Code Talker by Joseph Bruchac. We'll talk about the book, play games, and have a few snacks.

Friday from 12:00-1:30

It's time for our second Booknic! You bring lunch, the library will supply drinks, snacks, and dessert. Come tell us what you are reading and get suggestions from others.
