Voice Your Choice - Teen's Top Ten

You have until Sept 18th to vote! Vote for what, you ask. Here's the scoop, "Teens' Top Ten is a 'teen choice' list, where teens nominate and choose their favorite books of the previous year! Nominators are members of teen book groups in fifteen school and public libraries around the country...Readers ages twelve to eighteen can vote right here, online, anytime between Aug. 24 and Sept. 18; the winners will be announced in a webcast featuring WWE Superstars and Divas during Teen Read Week." (ala.org/teenstopten)

Teens read all summer long

The summer reading program for teens was a great success! Participants ranged from 7-12 grade, boys and girls, returning members and many new to the program. Their reading choices ran the gamut from classics such as the Count of Monte Cristo; to current favorites including Twilight, The Lightning Thief, and Harry Potter; to such popular manga series as Deathnote and Fruits Basket. Together these book loving teens read approximately 250,000 pages during July and August. That's about 1,000 books!!!

The library thanks The Friends of the Hillsdale Library for their generous support of this program. A thanks also goes to Applebee's, Auntie Anne's Pretzels, Cafe Capri, Friendly's, The Game Zone, The Golden Dynasty, TD Bank, and Wendy's for donated items.

Wii bowling with teens & seniors

A group of seniors received a Wii bowling tutorial from two members of the library's teen advisory group. The seniors then had the opportunity to bowl using the Wii remote. Their games were projected on the large screen in our meeting room.

Crushed by my "To Read" list

I often feel overwhelmed by the sheer number of books that I want to read. Consider that I that I work in a place that houses around 60,000 books, I am a slow reader, and I have two young children who need lots of my time.

As seems obvious the sense of, "So many books, so little time" is not new to me, but with the awesome slate of Fall releases I am starting to freak out due to a combination of excitement and dread.

Here's what I'm talking about (listed roughly in order of release date):
Tricks by Ellen Hopkins
Andromeda Klein by Frank Portman
The Miles Between Us by Mary E Pearson
Hate List by Jennifer Brown
Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins (sequel to The Hunger Games)
The Ask and the Answer by Patrick Ness (sequel to The Knife of Never Letting Go)
Going Bovine by Libba Bray (check out this funny & random book trailer)
Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld
Fire by Kristin Cashore (companion to Graceling)
Goth Girl Rising by Barry Lyga

Feel free to reserve this online at http://www.bccls.org/ or email Laura with requests.

Superheroes are here!

Move over manga, it's time for some superheroes!

Well, this is not entirely accurate. What happened was while compiling an order of newly released volumes of manga I realized that I have been neglecting members of the Justice League and other marvelous superheroes. So, I ordered a ton of both style graphic novels!

Here's a list of what has arrived so far:
SUPERHERO STUFF
Batman & Robin Reborn by Grant Morrison
Final Crisis by Grant Morrison
Green Lantern: the Sinestro Corps War, vol 1 & 2 by Geoff Johns
Immortal Iron Fist, vol 1 by Ed Brubaker
JLA: The Injustice League by Dwayne McDuffie
Superman: New Krypton, vol 1 by Geoff Johns
Trinity vol 1 by Kurt Busiek
Ultimates 2, vol 1 by Mark Millar
Y: The Last Man, vol 1&2 by Brian Vaughan

MANGA
Black Cat vol 7 & 8 by Kentaro Yabuki
Devil Does Not Exist, vol 2 by Takanashi Mitsuba
Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, vol 2 by Nagaru Tanigawa
Monkey High, vol 3 by Shouko Akira
Ouran High Host Club, vol 10 by Bisco Hatori
Wallflower, vol 5 7 6 by Tomoko Hayakawa
Yotsuba vol 3 & 4 by Kiyohiko Azuma

We also just received a wonderful donation of manga so look for those soon! There are even more comics on order. If you have requests for comics please contact Laura.

Historical fiction, book discussions, and the beach

I recently finished two historical fiction novels written for teens. They are, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne and Code Talker: A Novel About the Navajo Marines of World War Two by Joseph Bruchac. Although both were set during WWII, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas focuses on the Holocaust and Code Talker is about Navajo Indians trained to transmit crucial messages in their native language. I had very different experiences and reactions to these two books, but feel that both are extremely deserving of discussion.

The Talk It Up Book Club for 7th & 8th graders will be discussing Code Talker on Thursday, August 13th at 7:00 pm. I hope to see some of you there!

Speaking of book discussions, here is the complete listing for Talk It Up Book Club:

July 9 - Among the Hidden by Margaret Peterson Haddix

July 23 - Code Orange by Caroline B Cooney

August 13 - Code Talker by Joseph Bruchac

August 27 - Silent to the Bone by E.L. Konigsburg

If you don't want to come to book discussion focusing on just one book, then come to a BOOKNIC. You'll have a chance to sit on the lawn, eat lunch and talk about what you are reading. The booknics are set for Saturday, July 25th and Friday, August, 14th at noon.

I'm off to the beach on Saturday. If you need a book suggestion while I'm gone check our booklist page or my goodreads page. You can also send me an email anytime.

Mall Cop shown for teens

Teens (grades 7-12) are welcome to a free showing of Mall Cop on Thursday, July 2nd from 6:30-8:30. A movie featuring the mall seems wonderfully patriotic to me!

Speaking of July 4th, the library will be closed on July 3, 4, 5. So stock up on books, movies, CDs, and magazines for the long weekend.

Free SAT practice test

On Saturday, July 18th from 12:30-4:30 teens can take a practice SAT at the Hillsdale Library. The test will be administered by The Huntington Learning Center in Westwood. There are only 20 spots available. Contact the library at (201)358-5072 to register.

What could be more fun than a 4 hour test on a summer Saturday? Hey, practice makes perfect!

Got teen books?

As a way to celebrate National Library week custom t-shirts were designed by each staff member, highlighting their favorite books, music CDs, and movies. Funding for the t-shirts was provided by the Friends of the Hillsdale Library.
Here's what my shirt says on the back:

Laura's Pick for Teen Books

Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson
Rats Saw God by Rob Thomas
The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman
The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
The Ear, the Eye, and the Arm by Nancy Farmer
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
Eva by Peter Dickinson
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by J.K. Rowling
The Giver by Lois Lowry
Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
Red Scarf Girl: A Memoir of the Cultural Revolution by Ji-li Jiang
Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher

As soon as I finished the list (which is in no order and was suppossed to be limited to ten) I thought of others that I wanted on there. I mean how did I leave off Sabriel, and Looking for Alsaka, and The Outsiders, and...???

For ideas of what to read check our teen booklists and my goodreads page.

This was a painful, but fun exercise. If you spot me wearing my shirt and talk to me about it I may just give you candy!

TAG fundraiser

The TAG held a bake sale over the three days in order to raise money for the All Wrapped Up holiday program. In addition to money raised from the sale many TAG members and some library staff members also donated money. We were able to purchase Christmas gifts for a 17 year-old boy living in Bergen County.

Special thanks to Angela & Jenny for baking and selling; Lauren, Roger, Hilary, and Jacqi for selling; a patron from Woodcliff Lake for bringing delicious baked goods; and staff member Judy Jerome for dropping off the gifts.

Happy holidays to you! If you are in grades 7-12 and interested in joining the Teen Advisory Group contact Laura.

Picks for high school readers

This week I was fortunate enough to be invited into two sophomore English classes to talk about, you guessed it -- books! This was exciting to me for two reasons. First, there are so many great books published for older teen readers which are being overlooked. The quality and quantity of writing for ages 14-18 has increased tremendously in the last two decades. Second, I myself was not an avid reader in high school. I think the reason is because I was not given books that spoke to me. I hope that I can help students find a book that will resonate with them and get them into the habit of reading. Below is a list of some of the books I spoke about and a display of others I think might interest even the non-book lovers out there.
LOOKING FOR ALASKA BY JOHN GREEN
 ELSEWHERE BY GABRIELLE ZEVIN
10 THINGS TO DO BEFORE I DIE BY DANIELLE EHRENHAFT
 DOUBLE HELIX BY NANCY WERLIN
THE HITCHIKKER’S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY BY DOUGLAS ADAMS
MY SISTER’S KEEPER BY JODI PICOULT
ENDER'S GAME BY ORSON SCOTT CARD
 CANDY BY KEVIN BROOKS
AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF A FACE BY LUCY GREALY
THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT-TIME BY MARK HADDON
I AM THE MESSENGER BY MARKUS ZUSAK
NICK & NORAH’S INFINITE PLAYLIST BY RACHEL COHN AND DAVID LEVITHAN
RATS SAW GOD BY ROB THOMAS
 FEED BY MT ANDERSON
BALL DON’T LIE BY MATT DE LA PENA

Grease, books, trivia, oh my!

Spring break is officially over and I want to thank all of you who came to our programs. Singing along and hand jiving, talking about Skin, and trying out games was lots of fun. In addition to playing Wits & Wagers we played Mystify (which was dominated by the Simpsons - Zara and Ryan, not Bart & Lisa) and Last Word.

In May there will be a MA-PA meeting and a book club meeting. There will be a few activities in June and come July there will be lots going on! Let me know if you have any questions or suggestions for activities.

It's all about the books

Do you have trouble keeping track of what you have read or what you want to read? I did, but now I make use of http://www.goodreads.com/ for tracking and sharing info with friends. We've even set up a "group" for the high school book club so that people who can't make it to the meetings can still comment on the book.

Currently, mine is mostly a list, but with the help of a volunteer (yeah for Elysia) more reviews will be added soon. Feel free to check out my profile and consider setting one up for yourself. Be warned, it can become an addiction!

Also, I am in the process of updating our booklists. If you need some ideas about what to read, take a look here.

Yum, smoothies!

Over 20 teens came to the library for an indoor beach party. They made delicious smoothies, created sand art, hula hooped (congrats to Angela, the hoop champion), and played some "mini" golf (kudos to Dan).

Monday, April 21, 2008

Wii've got game

Over 15 teens stopped by to show off their Wii tennis skills. We also saw some excellent bowling. Finally, a Super Smash Brothers tourney allowed people to show their skills. We had time to play a few times, so there were multiple champions, but I think Brad can claim the title of "Over All Champ" -- at least for now!

While waiting for a turn with the Wii, people also played hangman. There were some seriously tough words (thanks to Jesse) -- diatribe, facetious, spurious, chemoheterotroph, and polemical. Then, Zara threw in the word that did not contain a traditional vowel, "rhythm".

Hopefully, we'll see more people at the other events this week!

Wrap it up!

It's the giving, not the receiving that is suppossed to be important. I love to give gifts, but I also love to wrap them! I think that the presentation is important, unlike my husband who often distributes gifts in the plastic bags from the store. If you are in grades 7-12 and feel like I do, come down on Thursday from 7:00-8:30 and create handmade wrapping paper, gift boxes, & cards. They can be holiday themed or for any other special occassion. Please let me know if you can make it.

The Teen Summer Reading Club will start in less than a month. It is open to Hillsdale residents entering grades 7-12 in September. Read whatever you want in order to earn points. At the end of the summer you will use your points to bid on prizes -- everything form gift cards to ipod cases to yoga mats. Stop in anytime after June 21st to pick-up a folder and start reading! Here are all the details.

We'll also be having a number of special events including a Murder Mystery Night and a Harry Potter Party and Sleepover. Chat & Chew

Thursday, May 24 will be our last Chat & Chew meeting until September. We'll meet from 7:00-8:00pm

Rather than discussing a particular book we will each recommend 3 great books to read over the summer. Please be prepared to say a few things about your 3 books - kind of like a book trailer or commercial. We'll also play book charades - acting things out so that the other group members can try to guess the book. We'll celebrate the year with pizza and sundaes! Let me know if you can come so I don't get too much or too little food.

WEBSITES

My Top Five
TeensPoint - Hundreds of reviews by teens for teens and lots of cool booklists. The only drawback is that it can be slow to load - be patient, it's worth it!

Reading Rants - Out of the Ordinary Teen Booklists - One of my favorite sites for booklists. Are you in the mood for vampire books? Check out the Fanging Around list. In the mood for non-fiction? Take a look at the Reality Bytes list.

Teen Reads - A great resource for current releases. Also, interestting articles and author reviews.

ALA Booklists and Awards - Lists for books that have been given awards by the American Library Association. The BBYA (Best Books for Young Adults) list is a great resource. The list tends to be long, so if you're in a hurry just check the top ten lists from the past few years. The Michael L. Printz award is given to books of outstanding literary merit.

GNOOKS - Although some of my favorite authors are not yet included and a few recommendations have been off, the concept of this site is so cool I can't help but recommend it! Enter an author you like and get a visual map of other authors you may like.

Others I Like

BCCLS Teen Page - Featured authors, booklists, and the GSTBA ballot online.

Good Reads for Teens - Use the drop down menu to view lists of books based on genre.

Read On - Recommended lists of great summer reads that I think are great picks for anytime of the year.

CPL Staff Recommendations - More booklists! Arranged by topic and genre.

Favorite Teenage Angst Books - Here you'll find book reviews grouped by categories such as: fitting in, diary-ish, and mixed-up families. The only drawback is that books have not been added in a couple of years.

PV by the Book...a book club for high school students

The snow messed with our schedule, but some members of PV by the Book were able to get together and discuss My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult. Overall, everyone seemed to enjoy this book and agree that the characters were realistically drawn and the story was a real page turner. The use of multiple voices to tell the story was well received by all -- this techniques helped readers to understand each character's individual perspective. There was some disagreement about the decisions made by some of the characters and what each of us would do if confronted with the same choices. If you read and enjoyed this book check out this list of suggested reading, http://www.bccls.org/hillsdale/TeensMySistersKeeper.htm

Our next meeting is set for Thursday, April 6 from 7:00-8:00pm. We will be discussing Elsewhere by Gabrielle Zevin. If you are interested stop by and pick-up a copy. Questions or comments, just email me.

What has Laura been reading?

Twilight by Stephenie Meyer
Bella's life changes dramatically when she decides to move to Forks, WA and live with her Dad. Here is what she has to say about it,
"About three things I was absolutely positive. First, Edward was a vampire. Second, there
was a part of him - and I didn't know how dominant that part might be - that thirsted for my blood.
And third, I was unconditionally and irrevocably in love with him."
A wonderfully evocative and suspenseful romance. Many readers told me this was their favorite book of 2005. It has already been optioned to be made into a movie and there are two sequels in the works.

I actually listened to this on CD, so if you're in the mood to be read to, grab the audio version. If you are looking for another vampire book try: The Silver Kiss by Annette Curtis Klause, Sweetblood by Pete Hautman, or Got Fangs? by Katie Maxwell. Another book that you may enjoy (although there are no fanged characters) is A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libby Bray.

Looking for Alaska by John Green
Winner of the Michael L Printz award for literary excellence in young adult literature. Check out John's blog...his Mom photographed him as he was on his cell phone getting the news.

The Day of Tears by Julius Lester
This slim volume tells of the largest single slave auction in American history through the use of multiple voices. Despite its brevity this book had an enormous emotional impact on me.

Criss Cross by Lynne Rae Perkins
Winner of the Newbery Award for excellence in children's literature. Discover how four 14-year-olds spend their summer and how their lives intersect and influence each other.

Keeper by Mal Peet
This novel tells of soccer and so much more. Renowned as the greatest goalie in history, El Gato relates the story of his youth to a sports journalist. He tells how he met a mystical goalie in the jungle near his village who taught him much about soccer and life.

Sledding Hill by Chris Crutcher
Within one month Eddie Proffit discovers the dead body of his father and his best friend. This is the beginning of a challenging year in which Eddie must confront his grief and battle censorship in his community.

Elsewhere by Gabrielle Zevin
Many people have wondered what happens when we die. Liz Hall is 15 when she is killed by a taxi and finds herself in Elsewhere. The life she knew may be over, but her new life is just beginning. This is the April selection for our high school book club, PV by the Book.

Be More Chill by Ned Vizinni
Jeremy is far from popular until the day he hears about the squib, a micro-computer in pill form that will make you cool. Jeremy's life definitely changes after ingesting the squib. Are the changes for the better? You be the judge!

Worlds Afire by Paul B Janeczko
Powerful, free-verse poems tell of the tragic circus fire which occurred in Hartford, CT on July 6, 1944 killing 167 people and injuring many more. A skillfully written book about a little known event in American history.

Jump-Man: Rule #1, Don't Touch Anything by James Valentine
Theo is the luckiest kid in the world - he gets to be the first person to test out the new TimeMaster Jumpman Pro. Unfortunately, things go awry and Theo does not jump to the expected time. Hopefully, Gen and Jules will be able to help Theo get back to the future without wreaking too much havoc in the past.

The Princess of Pop by Cathy Hopkins
If you like American Idol check out this installment in the Truth or Dare series. All too often Becca gives up on herself and her dreams. Will she have the staying power to make it through the Pop Idol competition? If you like this series you may also want to check out the Mates, Dates series by this author.

Messenger by Lois Lowry
Lowry brings together characters from the Giver and Gathering Blue in this book. I enjoyed reading more about Matty, Jonah, and Kira while learning more about Village.

Gregor and the Prophecy of Bane by Suzanne Collins
The action continues in this exciting follow-up to Gregor the Overlander. Gregor must return to the Underworld and confront the rats in order to save his baby sister, Boots.

10 Things to Do Before I Die by Daniel Ehrenhaft
Ted Burger is doing what he usually does, hanging out with his two best friends, Mark and Nikki at the diner. As a way to encourage Ted to live, Mark creates a list of 10 things that Ted should do before he dies. Things take a dramatic, and often hilarious turn, when Ted learns that he has been poisoned by the disgruntled fry cook.

Currently on my nightstand are: Marguax with an X, My Sister's Keeper, and Candyfreak: A Journey Through the Chocolate Underbelly of America

Cramming

As a student I had the habit of procrastinating, which often lead to cramming at the last minute (bumpy bus rides do not make for neat homework assignments)! In graduate school I FINALLY saw the error of my ways and began to keep up with assignments and even (gasp) complete them ahead of schedule. Unfortunately, this year I fell back into my old pattern!! I participated in a program with other librarians from BCCLS and am serving on a statewide committee that requires me to read specific books in a certain amount of time. I read 11 books in about 3 weeks. Even though I hurried a bit, I read some great books. Twilight by Stephanie Meyer and Day of Tears by Julius Lester were my favorites. Check the reviews page for complete listings. If you have waited to the last minute to start an assignment, talk to me, I can relate.

Recent Reads

It's been a while since I wrote anything about what I've been reading. So, here goes:

Fake ID by Walter Sorrells
For Chass and her Mom stepping into the library in their new town is not about checking out books, it's about picking a new name. They have moved many times and always select new aliases at random from books. Just after Chass' sixteenth birthday her Mom disappears. Chass has six days to find her Mom or end up in a foster home. A fast-paced mystery. Luckily the sequel is due out soon so we won't have to wait long for the next installment.

Gregor and the Prophecy of Bane by Suzanne Collins
This sequel to Gregor the Overlander is set in a world beneath NYC where bats, humans, and even cockroaches fight together against giant rats. Gregor re-enters the Underland in order to save his baby sister, Boots. This exciting adventure does not require you to read the first book in order to enjoy the second installment.

Eldest by Christopher Paolini
The second book in the Inheritance Trilogy will not disappoint fans of Eragon! This time around readers follow the adventure of Eragon and Saphira, as well as those of the Varden, and Roran.

Invisible by Pete Hautman
"Do I strike you as troubled?” asks Doug the narrator. Indeed, he is. But he is also witty and intelligent. This heart wrenching story is simply impossible to put down. It is my favorite book of 2005 (so far - there is a bit more time)!

I am currently listening to Twilight by Stephanie Meyer and reading Elsewhere by Gabrielle Zevin. If I am to believe what everyone says, Twilight may possibly knock Invisible out of the top spot on my list. I'll keep you posted.

Pirates of the Caribbean fans

I just finished reading Airborn by Kenneth Oppel - -- what a book! If you liked Pirates of the Caribbean I'd highly recommend Airborn (and Bloody Jack by L.A. Meyer). It is a great adventure set not at sea, but in the air.

Matt Cruse was born aboard an airship and flying feels more natural to him than walking on the ground. When he spots a hot air balloon in distress he is involved in an attempt to rescue it's pilot. The pilot is very ill, and shortly before dying he asks Matt if he saw the beautiful flying creatures. Matt concludes that these are the ramblings of a dying old man. A year later, a young woman comes aboard ship carrying the diary of her grandfather, the man Matt had rescued. What follows is a face-paced adventure featuring pirates, a shipwreck, wild animals, and a bit of romance.

Prom

It's that time of year again...Prom season! There are two new books about the prom, one from a girl's perspective and one from the guy's POV.

PROM by Laurie Halse Anderson (Speak; Fever, 1793; Catalyst) is the story of ... who never felt any desire to go to a stupid dance in her school gym, but when disaster strikes and her best friend needs help saving the prom things change.

24 Girls in 7 Days is by Alex Bradley. It is two weeks before the Prom and Jack, a very nice-guy, has no date. His two best friends secretly post an ad in the school's online newspaper. What happens as a result is that Jack must go out with 24 girls in 7 days and choose the perfect date.

Let me know what you think about these fun reads and how they compare to your Prom/dance experiences. As for me, I had a good time at both my junior & senior proms. I am actually married to my senior prom date!!

Books that I'm thankful for

Thanksgiving is around the corner and it got me thinking about what I am thankful for. There are many books, movies, and CDs that have made my life better. So far this year I am most thankful for One of Those Hideous Books Where the Mother Dies by Sonya Sones. Check out my all time favorites. Let us know what tops your list! It is much harder for me to pick music and movies. I'd have to include Ferris Bueller's Day Off, The Princess Bride, and the Lord of the Rings movies.

New books from favorite authors and more books in great series

From our favorite authors

Sarah Dessen never lets me down. Her newest book is called, The Truth About Forever. Another writer that you can count on is Meg Cabot. Check out her latest, Teen Idol. The book I'm dying to read is, Sea of Trolls by Nancy Farmer. I loved The Ear, the Eye, and the Arm and The House of the Scorpion so I can't wait until this one is returned so I can read it.

Sequels and additions to great series

Summer Reads

The summer is coming to an end and I thought it was about time I let you know about some of the books I read at the beach and at home.

Double Helix by Nancy Werlin is a great combination of suspense, coming-of-age, and a little genetic engineering thrown in the mix. This is a compelling read in which Eli is trying to find his way in the world and ends up discovering more about himself than he ever imagined.

A Heart Divided by Cherie Bennett & Jeff Gottesfeld tells of Kate's move from New Jersey to a small Southern town. She gets caught up in a debate over whether the school should continue to fly the Confederate flag. She struggles with being an outsider, but is able to make some friends and find romance. Ultimately she deals with the controversy through writing and staging a performance at the school. The play is included in the book. A good read, especially if you are interested in theater.

I have to say that my favorite book of the summer is One of Those Hideous Books Where the Mother Dies by Sonya Sones. Not only does this book have a great title, but the story of 15 year-old Ruby's move from Boston to LA to live with her famous father who she never met is funny, poignant, full of high-school drama, and extrememly well-written. I loved this book!

I also read two books told through correspondence. The Year of Secret Assignments by Jaclyn Moriarty features three friends who write to three guys at another school as part of a pen pal program. There is tons of humor, some heartbreak, and a bit of intrigue in this very entertaining book. ttyl by Lauren Myracle uses IMs to tell the story of three 10th grade friends struggling through 10th grade.

I've read some others that I'll tell you about in a few weeks. Have you read anything great or anything truly horrible lately???

What should we be getting?

It's been a long time since my age started with a "1" - Back in the day it was BMX bikes, skateboards, and metal music.

What ranks high on your minds? What can't you seem to find at the library?

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

So, I loved the movie version of HP & the Prisoner of Azkaban even though there were a few things from the book that were left out. I have a huge pile of books to read so I didn't have a chance to re-read the book. I'm curious how you liked the movie and if anyone took the time to re-read the book before heading to the theater.

I'll be the first to admit

I've been too busy playing around with the website to do much reading... I've picked up many books only to get bored with them and move on... Any suggestions for a page turner?
