The library purchased a few new videogames. Here's the list:

The summer reading program for teens was a great success! Participants ranged from 7-12 grade, boys and girls, returning members and many new to the program. Their reading choices ran the gamut from classics such as the Count of Monte Cristo; to current favorites including Twilight, The Lightning Thief, and Harry Potter; to such popular manga series as Deathnote and Fruits Basket. Together these book loving teens read approximately 250,000 pages during July and August. That's about 1,000 books!!!
Two final events this week: Creepy Creature craft on Tuesday at 3:30 and Silent to the Bone book discussion on Thursday at 7:00.
I often feel overwhelmed by the sheer number of books that I want to read. Consider that I that I work in a place that houses around 60,000 books, I am a slow reader, and I have two young children who need lots of my time.
Move over manga, it's time for some superheroes!Hey, teens -- whether you like to make things, talk about books, or play games there is something for you coming up this week at the library. Here's the schedule:

Teen movie night schedule:
Teen movie night schedule:
This past week was busy with a rubber stamp printmaking workshop, game event, book discussion, and a booknic!
I recently finished two historical fiction novels written for teens. They are, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne and Code Talker: A Novel About the Navajo Marines of World War Two by Joseph Bruchac. Although both were set during WWII, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas focuses on the Holocaust and Code Talker is about Navajo Indians trained to transmit crucial messages in their native language. I had very different experiences and reactions to these two books, but feel that both are extremely deserving of discussion.
Speaking of book discussions, here is the complete listing for Talk It Up Book Club:
Teens (grades 7-12) are welcome to a free showing of Mall Cop on Thursday, July 2nd from 6:30-8:30. A movie featuring the mall seems wonderfully patriotic to me!On Saturday, July 18th from 12:30-4:30 teens can take a practice SAT at the Hillsdale Library. The test will be administered by The Huntington Learning Center in Westwood. There are only 20 spots available. Contact the library at (201)358-5072 to register.
Have you ever wondered what the library is like at night? Well, now is your chance to find out!

You asked for them, we got them! We now circulate DS games in addition to Wii, XBox, XBox 360, and PS2. We started with 8 DS games last week, but since they were all checked out in a matter of hours we have already added 8 more. We've got games for the young & not so young, including:
Teens in grades 7-12 are invited to join members of the MA-PA (manga anime) club for a showing of Transformers on June 11th from 6:00-8:30 pm. We're gearing up for the sequel on 6/24!
There will be over 20 programs for teens at the library this summer! The complete listing will be posted soon. We'll kick things off in June with sign-ups for the summer reading club, book club, and a late night library lock-in. If you have questions please contact Laura. Many thanks to the Friends of the Hillsdale Library for their financial support.
TAG (Teen Advisory Group)

Last week a few teens joined me for a fascinating discussion of Neal Shusterman's thrilling and horrifying science fiction novel, Unwind. If you are in high school please consider joining Chat & Chew, our high school book club. We usually meet on the 4th Thursday of the month.
Music is a major influence in most people's lives. Since I'm in the "business" of teen literature I thought I'd share a few playlists that exemplify the intersection between teen books and music. To celebrate Teen Tech Week I have created a Morph Madness contest using the website http://www.morphthing.com/ You have to look at the images I created, and try to decide which celebrities I morphed together. The contest ends on March 31st.

October 12-18 is Teen Read Week, so stop what you are doing and read for the fun of it!
On Thursday, October 9th from 7-8 the MA-PA Club will host it's annual Cosplay event.
The TAG (teen advisory group) meeting scheduled for this Thursday will be frm 4:00-5:00pm. If you can't make it, you can stop by Friday, Oct 3 from 3:00-4:30pm. Questions or suggestions regarding the teen collection and events can be sent to Laura.
This week I was fortunate enough to be invited into two sophomore English classes to talk about, you guessed it -- books! This was exciting to me for two reasons. First, there are so many great books published for older teen readers which are being overlooked. The quality and quantity of writing for ages 14-18 has increased tremendously in the last two decades. Second, I myself was not an avid reader in high school. I think the reason is because I was not given books that spoke to me. I hope that I can help students find a book that will resonate with them and get them into the habit of reading. Below is a list of some of the books I spoke about and a display of others I think might interest even the non-book lovers out there.
Summer is almost over and that means, TIME FOR PRIZES! Everyone who participated in the teen summer reading club should have received an invitation to the party, a list of prizes, and a bid form. Check out photos of the prizes. All books must be recorded by August 25th. Please return your log AND bid form no later than August 31st. Contact Laura if you have any questions.

From June 23rd-August 25th Hillsdale teens (grades 7-12) can read or listen to any books, magazines, or comics – just read!
So, you've finished your required reading or you just don't want to start it. Well then, what should you read? Check out some booklists and other sites I like to check out for book ideas. If you're still not sure what to read you can take a look at my list of books on goodreads.com I am trying to add a few reviews every week.
Hot, hot, hot!!! Summer doesn't officially begin for a few weeks, but the thermometer tells a different story.
Spring break is officially over and I want to thank all of you who came to our programs. Singing along and hand jiving, talking about Skin, and trying out games was lots of fun. In addition to playing Wits & Wagers we played Mystify (which was dominated by the Simpsons - Zara and Ryan, not Bart & Lisa) and Last Word.
Do you have trouble keeping track of what you have read or what you want to read? I did, but now I make use of http://www.goodreads.com/ for tracking and sharing info with friends. We've even set up a "group" for the high school book club so that people who can't make it to the meetings can still comment on the book.
Over 20 teens came to the library for an indoor beach party. They made delicious smoothies, created sand art, hula hooped (congrats to Angela, the hoop champion), and played some "mini" golf (kudos to Dan).
Over 15 teens stopped by to show off their Wii tennis skills. We also saw some excellent bowling. Finally, a Super Smash Brothers tourney allowed people to show their skills. We had time to play a few times, so there were multiple champions, but I think Brad can claim the title of "Over All Champ" -- at least for now!
Are your friends going to be away during break? Feeling jealous that you won’t beon a beach somewhere? Well, there's plenty planned for teens at The HillsdalePublic Library.
There will be a TAG (teen advisory group) meeting thursday, April 3rd from 7-8pm. We will be finalizing programs to be held during spring break and in May. We'll also discuss fundraising ideas. If you have questions, email Laura.
We had fun during the break playing Guitar Hero, Wii tennis, and Wits & Wagers. Here's the list of events coming up:
It's a new year and we've got lots planned. Here's what's coming up:
It's the giving, not the receiving that is suppossed to be important. I love to give gifts, but I also love to wrap them! I think that the presentation is important, unlike my husband who often distributes gifts in the plastic bags from the store. If you are in grades 7-12 and feel like I do, come down on Thursday from 7:00-8:30 and create handmade wrapping paper, gift boxes, & cards. They can be holiday themed or for any other special occassion. Please let me know if you can make it.
I hope that you can make some time during the busy holiday season for these upcoming teen events:
Happy Teen Read Week! This year's theme is LOL and there are plenty of amusing ways to celebrate. You can:
We have added a few Wii games to our videogame collection. The library now has a selection of games for the Wii, PS2, XBox, Xbox360, and GameCube that can be checked out for a week at a time. In addition to those we have purchased we have received some generous donations.
TAG: Teen Advisory Group - October 4th from 7:00 - 8:00

Today's everyday moments are tomorrow's history. Help us create a record of what life is like in Hillsdale in 2007 for the A Day in Hillsdale Photo Book Project. Take pictures of what you and your friends do/wear/use(computers, ipods) on a typical day. We'd also like pictures of places around town where you go. Pictures must be taken between April 15-22 in Hillsdale. Click here for more details and for the release forms, http://hillsdale.bccls.org/OneDay.html Email digital photos to David Franz or drop off prints at the library.
It looks like most TAG members are away or busy enjoying the week off of school, so I am rescheduling the meeting. Instead of meeting on April 5th, we will meet on April 12th from 7-8.
TAG - April 5th from 7:00 - 8:00

The brackets for the NCAA basketball tournament have been announced and the start of the NBA playoffs isn't that far off. My fantasy basketball team has made it to the playoffs, yeah! Unfortunately, I play my husband in the first round. Needless to say, basketball is on my mind. If you want to indulge in some b-ball books, check out this list for teens.
When I think of Valentine's Day and Easter I think about chocolate! To celebrate this wonderful treat we had our second annual Teen Chocolate Fest (see pictures at http://www.flickr.com/photos/hillsdalelibraryteens/). Throughout the month, teens who stoped in could complete a survey/raffle and vote on the best type of chocolate. The results are in: Dark Chocolate - 13 votes, Milk Chocolate - 25 votes, White Chocolate - 2 votes. If you want to test your knowledge of candy bars try this fun quiz, http://www.thinkingfountain.org/
There is a TAG meeting scheduled for Thursday, March 1st from 7-8. Time to switch displays, decorate bulletin boards, update booklists, and label books in series.
There are many books and online databases that can SAVE YOU TIME when your working on school assignments. Please ask! We often have books set aside and/or helpful websites for you to check. Let whoever you speak to know that you are working on a project. Here's one example of what we can give you to get you started:
On Thursday, Feb 22nd from 6:30-7:30 we'll be having our Chat & Chew High School Book Discussion. We decided to read a variety of romances, so come on down and chat about: Just Listen, Companions of the Night, Blood and Chocolate, Hard Love, or The Princess Bride. We will take some time to talk about what we read over the summer, decide between As Simple as Snow and Donorboy to read for October, and get a list of other books to consider for the year. If you can't make it but want to read the book for October, let me know and I'll put a copy aside for you.
As a teen I was not a huge reader, so it would have been very hard for me to walk into a library or bookstore and pick out a book to read for school. For those of you who need to select an independent reading book for school I'd like to recommend some books for you to consider and let you know about some websites that you can go to to get more ideas. Feel free to stop in and see me anytime or send me an email, I'll be glad to help you find something! The prize list for the Teen Summer Reading program has been mailed out. There are many ways to celebrate national poetry month, here are a few ideas:The Teen Advisory Group, aka TAG will be meeting this Thursday, April 20th, 6:30 - 7:30. Get involved in making decisions about the library. We'll be working on plans for the library's grand re-opening, scheduled for May 2. Please note the date and time change from the usual schedule.
Teens are invited to stop in anytime or come to one of the events listed below:
The snow messed with our schedule, but some members of PV by the Book were able to get together and discuss My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult. Overall, everyone seemed to enjoy this book and agree that the characters were realistically drawn and the story was a real page turner. The use of multiple voices to tell the story was well received by all -- this techniques helped readers to understand each character's individual perspective. There was some disagreement about the decisions made by some of the characters and what each of us would do if confronted with the same choices. If you read and enjoyed this book check out this list of suggested reading, http://www.bccls.org/hillsdale/TeensMySistersKeeper.htm
As a student I had the habit of procrastinating, which often lead to cramming at the last minute (bumpy bus rides do not make for neat homework assignments)! In graduate school I FINALLY saw the error of my ways and began to keep up with assignments and even (gasp) complete them ahead of schedule. Unfortunately, this year I fell back into my old pattern!! I participated in a program with other librarians from BCCLS and am serving on a statewide committee that requires me to read specific books in a certain amount of time. I read 11 books in about 3 weeks. Even though I hurried a bit, I read some great books. Twilight by Stephanie Meyer and Day of Tears by Julius Lester were my favorites. Check the reviews page for complete listings. If you have waited to the last minute to start an assignment, talk to me, I can relate.
PV by the Book : A Book Discussion Group for High School Students *

As a new year begins it is always fun to think back about the great books, movies, and music from the previous year. Here's a list of what TAG members enjoyed in 2005:

There's lots going on for teens in October. Here's the rundown:

Last week we had the wrap-up party for the teen summer reading program. 23 teens came. The pizza and soda went fast, and although some people were shy to try it at first almost everyone took a turn playing some DDR on our big screen. Thanks to Emily, Tobin, and Renee for lending us your equipment! For those of you who couldn't make the party we are holding your prize at the Circulation desk.
There are a bunch of things going on for teens in September. Here are the details:

I just finished reading Airborn by Kenneth Oppel - -- what a book! If you liked Pirates of the Caribbean I'd highly recommend Airborn (and Bloody Jack by L.A. Meyer). It is a great adventure set not at sea, but in the air.
The GSTBA winners have been announced, here are the results:
Did you finish The Second Summer of the Sisterhood or Eagle Strike and are dying to know when the next installment is coming out? Well, here's a list of new books in some of your favorite series:
It's that time of year again...Prom season! There are two new books about the prom, one from a girl's perspective and one from the guy's POV.

Thanksgiving is around the corner and it got me thinking about what I am thankful for. There are many books, movies, and CDs that have made my life better. So far this year I am most thankful for One of Those Hideous Books Where the Mother Dies by Sonya Sones. Check out my all time favorites. Let us know what tops your list! It is much harder for me to pick music and movies. I'd have to include Ferris Bueller's Day Off, The Princess Bride, and the Lord of the Rings movies.

The summer is coming to an end and I thought it was about time I let you know about some of the books I read at the beach and at home.
It's been a long time since my age started with a "1" - Back in the day it was BMX bikes, skateboards, and metal music.
So, I loved the movie version of HP & the Prisoner of Azkaban even though there were a few things from the book that were left out. I have a huge pile of books to read so I didn't have a chance to re-read the book. I'm curious how you liked the movie and if anyone took the time to re-read the book before heading to the theater.
I found some of these other blogs... Check 'em out if you wish. You'll get an idea about what we're lookin to do here.
